Much more needs to be done to give our Royal Navy and Royal Marines the support they deserve; thousands of young service men and women are risking their lives around the world – yet we often hear little about the dangers they face at work or the struggles they return home to. Some return with horrific injuries such as missing limbs, and many find it hard settling back into a normal family life after the pressures of working in intense conflict situations.
Seafarers UK is launching a pledge to highlight this ‘forgotten’ role played by the Royal Navy and Royal Marines in recent operations such as Afghanistan and Iraq. We want to galvanise public support for our Navy and help raise vital funds for Naval charities.
Your support is crucial to our campaign; every pledge we receive will help give a voice to our Royal Naval Heroes and raise awareness for their work as part of our Armed Services. Our poll shows that the vast majority of people in the UK want more to be done for those serving – yet it also shows that there is a real lack of understanding around the role of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines and their role as part of the Armed Services.
The NOP Poll shows:
- 77% of people questioned said that UK servicemen and women do not receive enough support when they return home from military service in Iraq and Afghanistan
- Only 52% of people questioned were aware that the Royal Marines are part of the Royal Navy
- 77% of people questioned were not aware that Royal Navy and/or Royal Marines personnel made up over 50% of personnel serving in Afghanistan *
- 75% of people questioned thought that the Royal Navy and Royal Marines do not receive enough recognition for their work
