Adventurers looking for the challenge of a lifetime are invited to take part in a new event guaranteed to test all their skills and endurance. The event, taking place on the Isle of Wight on 9th-12th May is in aid of Seafarers UK.
Based on and around the Isle of Wight, participants will have the opportunity to learn to crew a yacht and then sail all the way around the island. If that wasn’t a challenge in itself, participants will then have to cycle around the 62 miles of hilly coastline. This exciting event is being organised by the same people that brought the 24 Peaks Challenge to the maritime community, one of the most popular charity challenges of last year.
Each team of six people will be asked to raise £5,000 which will be used to provide vital support to those in need from the maritime community including seafarers, ex-seafarers and their families. Last year’s 24 Peaks Challenge raised £265,000 for Seafarers UK and it is hoped that the Great Island Challenge will rival this sum.
Lee Dobbins, Seafarers UK, said,
“The Great Island Challenge is a fantastic new challenge set to compete with the 24 Peak Challenge in terms of the levels of endurance, determination and teamwork needed to complete the weekend challenge set in this beautiful location.”
Seafarers UK is Britain’s leading seafaring charity helping people from the Royal Navy, Merchant Navy and fishing fleets. The charity needs to raise £3 million per year to continue its work.
