Maritime community Bonds at Seafarers Midsummer Night Gala

A splendid evening was had by all at the exclusive Seafarers’ Midsummer Night Gala on 24 June. And, thanks to the generous support of all our guests and corporate supporters, the money raised on the night exceeded all expectations.

Held in the impressive surroundings of the Imperial War Museum, the Gala, hosted by First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Sir Jonathon Band KCB, coincided with James Bond centenary year and the museum’s own Bond exhibition. Guests enjoyed a private view of the exhibition before dinner, followed by special Goldenball cocktails in the viewing gallery. Lucky winners of the grand prize draw also received luxury prizes including a gourmet food hamper, designer purse and champagne.

We were also honoured to have former Naval Petty Officer, Allen Parton and his award winning dog, Endal among the guests. Allen was severely injured in the Gulf War, but now enjoys an independent life thanks to Endal, who responds to over 100 commands and even understands sign language.

In his speech, Allen highlighted the importance of charities like Seafarers UK who raise funds for our servicemen and women and their families, and he encouraged everyone to support our campaign to raise awareness of our ‘naval heroes’. Pledge cards were given out during the evening for people to show their support for the campaign, with the First Sea Lord setting an example by being one of the first to sign.

Everyone delved deep into their pockets during the dinner auction, helping raise a grand total of over £32,000. Some of the prizes snapped up included a luxurious day out for 10 people on board the narrow boat, Maisie complete with champagne, buffet lunch and guided tour of Hampton Court; a day of rugby at the famous Bath rugby ground; a unique real war simulation day with the Royal Navy and an exclusive day on board HMS Diamond or Dauntless during their forthcoming sea trials.

We were also delighted to present Platinum Corporate Benefactor Awards to four companies on the evening, in appreciation of their particularly generous support: The Maersk Company, Braemar Seascope, BAE Systems and MBDA. MBDA also presented Seafarers UK with a cheque for £18,000 on the night, raised from their 2007 Charity Dinner event.

Steve Wadey, Managing Director, MBDA, said:

“MBDA is proud to have been one of the original supporters of Seafarers UK and to date we have donated more than £31,000 towards this important charity. Our long tradition of working with the Navy extends to pledging our continued support to Seafarers UK.”
