‘Seafarers’ Service – Glasgow Cathedral 19 October 2008

19 Oct 2008 - 11:00
19 Oct 2008 - 12:00

The ancient Cathedral of Glasgow has many proud connections with the sea and seafarers. To that end, it is staging what it hopes will be an annual special service to celebrate that link.   The “Seafarers Service” will be held on the 19th October 2008 and all and any who have links with sea will be welcome to join the morning service at 11am.  It is anticipated that the RN, RM, Merchant Navy, RNLI, Coastguard, RN Association, Sea Cadets and The Glasgow College of Nautical Studies, to name but some, will be represented.  It is also hoped that the RM Band Scotland will play. There will be a retiring offering for Seafarers UK.

A stroll around the Cathedral will reveal many tangible connections with the sea. As well as naval Rolls of Honour,  in the North Transept there are the ship’s bell from HMS Glasgow and two lancet windows dedicated to the Royal Navy, the R.N.V.R., and the Merchant Navy. At the south side of the crossing is a canopied oak chair with a prayer desk, a memorial to members of the RNVR. Meanwhile, a visit to the far end of the Lower Church will reveal a row of medieval chapels, one of which is that of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors. Recently, an 18th-century votive ship was presented and can be seen high on the right hand side.

Come and join us on October 19th!
